So here we are on New Years Day.

No resolutions, but a weight challenge with a pal to face up to!

I am a very lucky girl as I have a Bernina 830 - with the embroidery module. Because of this PD I have it has not had much use so this evening I am going to update the firmware. This is a small step but it is progress. Wish me luck.

After lots of publicity, and following American newsgroups, the new Bernina 830 has been launched in the UK.

Despite the fact we are in the bottom of a recession, or so we are led to believe,I think this will a popular Bernina product.

I am still unsure whether I can justify such a huge outlay, but we are planning another visit to Manchester to have a look.

I have been doing some family history, and here is a monument to my maternal great, great, uncle and Aunty. Nearby are their parents who travelled north from Devon. Even nearer are my paternal grandparents. I feel very lucky to have had such a stable family.

For quite a long time I have dealt with Bamber Sewing Machines of Manchester, but have never been there

Saturday saw us up and off - leaving sunny Coxhoe

The traffic was quiet until we reached Manchester where we got lost! Blame the navigator!

Steve Alan and their Dad "Mr. Bamber" made us really welcome - access was great - thanks for the help boys! It was lovely to put faces to names.

Our purpose was to see the new Brother Innovis 1 machine - I was very impressed, especially by the intelligent eye. Thanks Lorna for the demo.

Another bonus was that Jayne

won the prize draw - Pink Sewing machine!!

What a great day.

Back to blogging with good cause.

Coxhoe is an old mining village - on the up. We have new housing a good school, and lovely people.

The one thing we lacked was a good fruit and veg shop. However, that has been rectified with The Village Greengrocer. It is so good The Northern Echo did a review which you can see here.

I have a special interest in the Parkinsons Disease Society, so started making bags for the shop, with donations going to the Parkinsons Disease Society.

Thanks everyone who has bought a bag, and to all who have helped, especially Jayne, Linda, Colin and Lisa and of course Peter.

BLOGGING AGAINST DISABLISM

As it says above I am less able person.

Normally I do not acknowledge the label "Disabled". However, as I have hit my mid fifties I have also hit what I perceive as a glass ceiling when it comes to both treatment and care from "the system".

I have found it impossible to access any physio, from our National Health Service, and eventually found private treatment.

After a great deal of angst and means testing I have finally been allocated extra hours of care.

I am a fairly intelligent articulate person, and this has been an uphill struggle.

My question is, how do less capable people access the system? Who speaks for those who are unable to speak for themselves?

This is merino roving put through the machine with no backing. It can be worked from either side, and because there are no feed dogs the density depends on the free motion movement.

This is the very first attempt - it is the sample project that came with my machine.

EMBELLISHER

An Embellisher is a machine that makes felt. It enmeshes the fibres using 5 barbed needles - see the useful finger guard. The results are very intereesting, dependent upon the raw materials used.

I plan to experiment further using silk instead of roving. The first piece was merino wool embellished into calico.

First of December and warm enough to go for a walk - well a wheel.

Here are our new friends.

WORLD FAMOUS SHORTBREAD FROM THE KING! (AKA PETER)

Here it is the secret recipe!

First, chuck 8 to 8 and a half ounces of plain flour into the food processor, with 4 to 4 and a half ounces of cornflour. Blitz for a few seconds to mix. Then add 4 to 4 and a half ounces of caster sugar and 8 ounces of cubed butter. Pulse and then blitz until well mushed together. Carefully remove blade from mass. Take out dough, and divide into 2 equal parts. Knead each gently until smooth.

Press each half into a lightly greased 7 inch sandwich tin. I use the back of a spoon to smooth surface evenly. Using the back of a fork, press around the outer edge (see picture). Prick all over with a fork. Chill out in fridge - (the shortbread that is) for a minimum of one hour.

Heat oven to 160 degrees. Place shortbread on top shelf, and bake for between 35 and 45 minutes, checking half time and if necessary change places if over browning. When shortbread is golden brown remove from oven and using a sharp knife cut into eighth's. Leave to cool in tin.

When cool tip out place in biscuit tin and dust with caster sugar.

Be sure to sniff contents every time you lift the lid.

I did not know what this sculpture represented as I as wheeled past it pdq!
However, In response to comments I have done some research - well asked the neighbour, who tells me it represents the seams of coal - three of them that go out from Seaham under the North Sea. Will find out more on our next visit!

FASHION AND EMBROIDERY - REVIEW

The Fashion and Embroidery Show at Harrogate is now run by a business instead of being sponsored by Madeira.

Perhaps that was why this years show seemed to lack the usual buzz. Colleges, students and individual textile artists were still present, but there was also the usual plethora of vendors.

Ii enjoyed it and will go again, Here are a few pictures.
